Hoosac's History Club Visits Tibbits Schoolhouse Circa 1830, Dr. Ira Whitehead's Grave & More

October 21st, 2022

Hoosac History Club students toured three local cemeteries, visiting the graves of child Ruth Sprague, whose stone is known for its unique epitaph, the infamous and haunted graves of murderess Mary Rogers, and the final resting place of Hoosac's own physician, Dr. Ira Whitehead.

Dr. Whitehead was injured while serving in the second World War, and had returned home to care for students at Hoosac who were gravely ill with the Spanish flu. After contracting the flu, he succumbed to the combined stresses from both flu and injuries sustained overseas.

Students also had an opportunity to tour the Tibbits schoolhouse, constructed in the 1830s for the children of tenant farmers. The schoolhouse has been preserved and is open to the public.
